Turning 1M users into a community

Community

The Problem
We had a million women using Life every day. But they were using it alone. No way to connect. No way to share what was really going on. It felt like a missed opportunity, for them and for us.

What we noticed
When I spoke with users, a pattern showed up: different women had very different problems. Some wanted to talk about skincare. Others about EMS. Many about pregnancy. But they all wanted a safe place to talk openly.

The constraint
We were just two people: me as the designer, one full-stack dev. If we opened the floodgates and let millions of people talk at once, it could easily turn into chaos.

The twist
So we treated AI like our “third teammate.”

  • AI filtered out harmful or off-topic comments so conversations stayed safe.

  • AI powered a dashboard so we could see what was happening in real time: what topics were trending, how people were engaging, where problems popped up.

The extras
We also gave premium users ways to express themselves with profiles and personas, adding more personality to the community.

The outcome
What started as a small experiment turned into a thriving community. Engagement went up, women finally had a place to share and connect, and we uncovered insights we never had before, like which countries were most active and which topics drove the most discussion.
