How I used AI as a sole designer for an app with a million users

AI

People are often surprised when they find out our iOS and Android app has over 1 million users.
They’re even more surprised when they hear it’s built by just two people, me (the designer) and one developer.

We don’t have a big team, but we do have a big helper, AI.
It’s become part of almost everything we do

1. Instant translation

We support 17 languages without a translation team. AI handles it in minutes, I just check to make sure it sounds natural before we ship.

2. Personal daily tips

Every day, users get tips based on what they log in the app, like a small, friendly nudge that fits their day.

3. Smart chat

Our chat feature knows where a person is in their journey and gives answers that make sense for them. It’s warm and helpful, but never replaces a real doctor.

4. Letters as rewards

Log something in the app and you get a personalised letter, a little moment of joy. AI writes it so it feels unique every time.

5. Custom illustrations

Each letter comes with an illustration in our app’s style. AI creates them on the spot, so every picture matches the mood.

6. A healthy community

AI suggests topics for our community, writes engaging titles, and quietly removes spam. That way the space stays friendly and safe.

7. Notifications that feel personal

Whether it’s a special offer or a health tip, AI helps make notifications sound human, not like an ad.

8. Paywall text that works

We test different headlines and subtitles on our paywall. AI creates new ideas, and we keep the ones that work best.

9. Partner support

If a user invites their partner, AI sends the partner tips too, from handling mood swings to celebrating happy days.

10. Emotional forecasts

AI helps predict how someone might feel and gives ideas for food, exercise, relationships, and mental health, always as friendly guidance, never as medical advice.

Keeping it safe

Our app doesn’t require sign-in, so users stay anonymous. We also make it clear we’re not a replacement for a doctor. Our goal is to educate and support, not diagnose.

The truth about AI and design

AI hasn’t taken my job. It’s made my work more creative.
I spend less time on repetitive tasks and more time designing thoughtful experiences.

With AI, a team of two can now do what used to take a whole department.
And that’s how we’ve been able to design for a million people, without losing the personal touch.
